Roaches and filth in abortion clinics

" I would like to see a national entity like the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Hospitals that would oversee the nation's clinics."

"We found required emergency equipment stored in a closet under a stack of other things. That is extremely dangerous. In addition, the place was filthy, blood stained pads and sheets, filthy surgical equipment, a general lack of infection control. These places cannot be permitted to operate in this way."

Rat Poison stored with urine tests

PR Newswire Association reported on October 13, 1989 (Florida department of HRS closes Fourth abortion clinic)  that rat poison was stored in the same closet-like room where urine tests were given and sterilizing of equipment was done at the Miami International Aesthetic Center abortion clinic. .

Dark and Filthy abortion clinic

The New York Times (Hospital Says It Barred Doctor in Abortion Death : 7/16/1993) reported that the Metro Women's Center on Roosevelt Avenue in Corona, office of abortionist David Benjamin, was a dark, filthy, poorly ventilated room without the equipment necessary for surgical procedures like abortions. The description came from  a paramedic who tried to revive abortion patient, Ms. Negron after Benjamin performed the botched and fatal procedure.

The paramedic, Freddy Noboa, said he found the woman with a breathing tube erroneously inserted in her stomach instead of her lungs, so that her oxygen mask had filled with stomach fluid. The doctor on the scene would not give his name to the paramedics, but State Health Department officials say they are certain it was Dr. Benjamin.

"It was a horror scene," said Mr. Noboa, who works for the city's Emergency Medical Service and is based at New York Hospital Center in Queens. During 11 years as a paramedic, he said, "I've seen shootings, stabbings, you name it. But this stopped me in my tracks."

Dead cockroaches found in abortion sterilizing room

Inspectors found these violations at the Ladies First abortion Clinic in Pembroke Pines Florida:

  • The storage room also was filthy
  • Dust covered equipment and supplies throughout the facility.
  • The facility was infested with cockroaches, and dead cockroaches were found in the sterilizing room and scattered throughout the facility.
  • Debris was scattered throughout the clinic – including old boxes, broken furniture and unused equipment. This debris, found stacked in corners, against walls in the restroom and in the sterilization room
  • Furniture was clearly a fire hazard and a health hazard since someone could trip over it.
  • Cobwebs hung from the sprinkler system.

PR Newswire, reported in October 5,1989 in their article, Florida HRS closes Broward County abortion clinic, agency claims facility worse of recent closings, that one state health inspector said ,

"There were dead cockroaches in the sterilizing room, and men's old, dirty socks on a shelf in the recovery room. The air vents were covered with filth. Cobwebs draped down from the ceiling sprinkler system. And debris was scattered from one end of the place to the other."

Abortion surgical equipment was "caked in dust and dirt"

The Miami Herald reported that inspectors found the Today’s Women’s Medical Center abortion clinic  to be "Filthy" because they particularly noted that surgical equipment was "caked in dust and dirt."

The October 7, 1989, Herald article entitled Abortion clinic pushed riskier anesthesia, accused the clinic of other unsafe abortion practices. The owner, Vladimar Rosenthal owns several abortion clinics in the South Florida area.

Abortion clinic shut down: Dirty

On June 4, 1998, The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that a Fulton County judge ordered that the Midtown Hospital abortion clinic to be temporarily shut down. The article entitled, Abortion clinic may appeal closing, said that the order followed a two-year investigation by the state's Department of Human Resources.

According to the report, the state found the following violations:

  • The clinic was overcrowded
  • The clinic was understaffed
  • The clinic was dirty
  • The clinic was a danger to patients
  • The clinic had a lack of emergency policies
  • They had dirty floors
  • They had stained ceiling tiles
  • There was peeling paint

Roaches crawling, dead rodent in hallway of abortion clinic

In June of 2005, horrific reports surfaced by the Kansas City, Pitch Weekly about the condition of an abortion clinic operated by Kansas abortionist Krishna Rajanna.

The June 16th article, Mm, Mm Good, Startling allegations against an abortion doctor have been the centerpiece of two years of legislative warfare in Kansas, the Pitch reported that when police detectives arrived at the abortion clinic they found that there were dirty dishes in the sink and on a tabletop, trash was strewn around and roaches crawled across countertops.

The officer who investigated the clinic stated, "Trash was everywhere and roaches crawling across the countertops, with a smell of stench in the room. My partner observed the procedure room was filthy, he told me he saw dried blood on the floor and the room looked nasty to him. In a statement to me, one witness related how Roe 870 was a filthy man who did not properly sterilize his equipment. I thought I had seen every vile, disgusting crime scene but was in for a shock when I started this investigation."

Board inspectors stated (among other things) that they found a dead rodent in the clinic hallway.

On February 16, 2004, testimony from one of Rajann's clinic workers before the State's House Federal and State Affairs Committee revealed that Rajanna advertised in the yellow pages as "Abortions Affordable," attracting unsuspecting low-income woman.

The testimony was presented by Kansans for Life who had interviewed the employee, after she contacted a pregnancy center for advice on how to file a complaint against the abortion clinic. They said that the woman they referred to as "Ruby" to protect her identity,  had been employed for over a year at Rajanna’s office, without incident, and continued there for several more weeks.

According to the testimony, "Ruby" was distressed at the practices of Rajanna and the deplorable, filthy conditions inside his offices. She said other employees were also disgusted with the way Rajanna did business.

"Ruby" revealed the following irregular JOB PRACTICES:

Rajanna employs 4 staffers, and for part of "Ruby’s" employment time Rajanna employed a Certified Nurse Aide. Other than the CNA, no one with any formal medical training was employed during her tenure. No published medical training materials were ever given to "Ruby". She claims that references were not checked on anyone who applied for a job nor was the truth of their alleged job experience confirmed. When "Ruby" was interviewed, she was not asked to produce a record of immunizations, nor was she told to obtain any missing immunization shots. She believes that was also the case for other employees.

"Ruby" had applied for a position as receptionist /physician helper. She was surprised when, soon after being hired, she was called inside the procedure room to assist with abortions. "Ruby" was uncomfortable in the role of surgical assistant.

Rajanna’s employees, including "Ruby", picked up his drug orders from neighborhood pharmacies. Drugs were stored in a locked closet on site to which all employees had key access. At the time she was hired, "Ruby" can recall no questions asking if she had a criminal record.

"Ruby" revealed the following disturbing practices PRIOR TO SURGICAL ABORTIONS:

"Ruby" was shown how to take a patient’s blood sample for the Rh test. She was not made aware of several procedural variances that can affect the accuracy of the test. When completed, the bloody slides, gloves and other contaminated products are tossed into regular plastic trash bags. "Ruby" stated that there are no Bio-Hazardous waste containers anywhere onsite.

Minors who come for abortions are counseled over the phone. Prior to the issuance of the attorney general’s opinion in June, "Ruby" knew some minors had been aborted as young as 13. After the opinion, staff was told not to take appointments for minors under 16.

"Ruby" revealed the following disturbing practices DURING SURGICAL ABORTIONS:

There are no changing rooms for patients and only one bathroom onsite for use by the public, patients and staff.

A woman being aborted is brought to the procedure room clothed and put up on a bare table. An employee helps her lower her slacks and places a drape under her bottom. On her own initiative, between patients, "Ruby" said she wiped the table with alcohol.

"Ruby" was told how to insert an IV (intravenous line). No patient vital signs are taken during the abortion.

"Ruby" has no training in CPR and believes the other employees also do not possess such training. She recalls being frightened at witnessing one abortion in spring 2003 where a minor went into shock from an allergic reaction to abortion medications. Rajanna lifted up the patient and literally carried her into his car, taking her to hospital.

"Ruby" revealed the following disturbing practices AFTER SURGICAL ABORTIONS:

After the abortion, an employee removes the IV, immediately puts sanitary pads inside the patient’s underwear and pulls up the patient’s lower garments. The patient, though unsteady, is then walked to a couch with staff assistance but without use of a wheelchair. This "recovery" area is barely a semi-private space. The patient’s friend, not an employee, attends the patient on the couch. "Ruby" told KFL that no post-procedure vital signs are taken.

The patient is dismissed approximately 20 minutes later. No blood flow has been checked and no exam or discussion with doctor takes place before leaving the clinic. The patient is given antibiotic pills to take at home and has been given papers saying she can call the clinic, even after office hours. Patient has been requested to return within 21 days, although it was "Ruby’s" observation that 25% or less of the women actually returned for follow-up.

"Ruby" revealed the following disturbing STERILIZATION & DISPOSAL PROBLEMS:

Rajanna and staff wear gloves, but Rajanna’s medical jacket is infrequently washed, exhibiting dried blood- stains, food and dirt. Sometimes, clinic instruments were rinsed in bleach, but not sterilized. Two dishwashers adjoining a toilet are the "sterilizers."

Unexamined fetal remains are strained through a sock into a jar and then put inside plastic bags, plastic convenience store cups and milk cartons. The cups and cartons are stored in the office refrigerators and freezers, adjoining unsealed and open food.

Nearly every area in the clinic is dirty and disheveled. There is no medical waste pickup service. At the end of the business day, all clinic trash, including bio-hazardous materials, is put into large trash bags that Rajanna loads into his car. Rajanna then drives with these bags to his Missouri home where they have been seen set outside for regular residential trash pickup. ( End of testimony)

In February of 2005, the State's Medical Board issued an emergency order after the state found the following deficiencies at Rajanna's abortion clinic:

(1) Licensee had carpeting on the floor of a surgical procedure room;

(2) the trash cans in the clinic did not have lids;

(3) sharps containers were overflowing;

(4) human tissue was stored on a counter in the utility room for a time and was then stored in the freezer in a refrigerator where food was also kept;

(5) the clinic had an overall appearance of clutter and disarray.

( 6) Licensee did not properly dispose of sharp objects and human tissue/medical waste.

(7). Licensee drew medications in syringes and kept the syringes in the refrigerator for future use. The syringes were not marked or labeled.

(8) Licensee maintained in the office several expired medications.

(9) Licensee did not properly label medications he dispensed.

(10) Licensee did not follow the Practice Guidelines For Sedation And Analgesia By Non-Anesthesiologists when using conscious sedation in the office.

In the June 14,2005 final order issued by the board (Docket # 05-ha-58) it notes that the, "evidence shows that Rajanna maintained medical waste by placing materials in a container following a procedure, but the waste container was found to not have a lid on both occasions that the Board investigator inspected the clinic. The Board finds and concludes that this conduct is not only likely to harm the public, which includes Respondent’s employees, but is also an unreasonable risk that a physician should recognize. The improper disposal of medical waste was an issue that required correction by the February 2005 order." The board revoked Rajanna's license.

Employee Lori Jakes told the state that, "Personally to me the office was never really dirty."

Abortion clinic witness, appalled at  "filthy dirty" conditions

In 1990, Kentucky state officials attempted to close an abortion office owned by abortionist Ronachai Banchongmanie.

The licensing debate became an issue in after a woman complained that she was "absolutely appalled" at the "filthy dirty" conditions of the clinic. The woman complained to the CHR, which inspected the facility and substantiated the woman's complaints. In 9/90, the CHR temporarily shut down the clinic for operating without a proper license. He was later allowed to reopen.

The Louisville Courier Journal (Louisville couple's lawsuit blames obstetrician in baby's 2005 death :5/19/2006)reported that in 1998, Banchongmanie was ordered to pay a Henderson woman $21,000 after a Jefferson Circuit Court jury ruled that he botched a 1991 abortion.

In 1997, an Evansville, Ind., woman sued Banchongmanie, claiming he failed to complete her abortion, leaving her with an unwanted child. That suit was later dismissed.

In 1995, a Louisville woman claimed in a lawsuit that parts of a fetus remained in her body for a month after Banchongmanie performed an incomplete abortion the year before.

A Jefferson County jury ruled in favor of Banchongmanie

One-room non-sterile abortion facility

On May 9, 2003 the Boston Globe reported in an article entitled, State Board, abortion case appalling, that Massachusetts abortionist Jian Yu’s license was suspended indefinitely.

The Globe stated that Yu had performed 500 abortion procedures in his Malden office – which the was described as, "a one-room, nonsterile facility with no assistant, emergency equipment or even running water on hand - leaving a 21-year-old woman fighting for her life."
