Salon.com, NARAL by any other name The reproductive rights movement's shift in emphasis from "abortion" to "choice" is a shrewd marketing move, says a top branding expert. By Sheerly Avni: 1-15-2006/www.ries.com

Quote: Ries and Ries is an Atlanta-based marketing strategy firm that he runs with his daughter Laura Ries. Ries was asked by Salon Magazine what he thought about the marketing strategy of NARAL, National Abortion Rights Action League specifically the emphasis from the word abortion to choice, He replied, “I think that's brilliant. Who can argue with it? Because you want to present the message in as positive a manner as possible. You don't want to be against something, you want to be for something. Who wants to be against choice?” Ries was also asked what advice he would give to pro-life groups, “ I wouldn't work on the other side of the issue because I don't believe in it. As a professional communicator, you can't get excited about communicating issues you don't believe in. I mean, if Adolf Hitler asked me to help him out with the Nazi party, then I'd have to say, "No thanks, Adolf, do it yourself."

Quote: "So, at least he (Judge Roberts) has a shot, I think. We don't know what he'd do if he had to rule on Roe versus Wade, but at least he has a shot, I think, at becoming the kind of justice that is not in the hip pocket of the right wing. Having said that, ladies, get your abortions now. If you need one, go now!"

Planned Parenthood, March for Women’s Lives –2004 Quotes

Quote: “…The fundamental question reproductive rights raises is this: do we view women as fully human, fully adult, or do we see them as part-child, part-chattel? Do we think women can assume adult responsibility for their actions, for their most important personal decisions, or do we think women are so immature that "Daddy," in the form of the government, has to decide when we get pregnant and whether we carry a pregnancy to term.”

Quote: "I had an abortion at 17 and it was the worst thing I ever did. It was the first time I'd had sex, and that was rotten. I'd always thought it was going to be all violins, and it was just awful. I was two months gone when I realised. I went to my mum and she said, without pausing for breath: 'You have to get rid of it.' She told me where the clinic was, then virtually pushed me off. She was so angry. She said I'd got myself in this mess, now she had to get me out. But she didn't come. I went alone. I was terrified. It was full of other young girls, and we were all terrified and looking at each other and nobody was saying a bloody word. I howled my way through it, and it was horrible. I would never recommend it to anyone because it comes back to haunt you. When I tried to have children, I lost three - I think it was because something had happened to my cervix during the abortion. After three miscarriages, they had to put a stitch in it. In life, whatever it is, you pay somewhere down the line. You have to be accountable."
